What is Reiki Healing?

This post is written in partnership with Awaken Reiki & Soul Healing

I knew nothing about Reiki before I met Deborah Monacelli, owner of Awaken Reiki & Soul Healing. I didn’t even know how to pronounce it correctly (ray-key), so I did some research before my session, starting with Deborah’s website:

“Reiki is a method of stress reduction and relaxation promoting healing. The word “Reiki” means spiritually guided life-force energy and it was developed in Japan in 1922 and brought to the West in 1937. Its meaning comes from two Japanese words: Rei, which means God’s wisdom or the Highest Power, and Ki which is life-force energy.”

Back up…did someone say stress reduction and relaxation?  Sign. Me. Up.

I scheduled my appointment for January 31st, which just happened to be the day of the super blue blood moon. My son and I planned to get up early to witness the once-in-a-lifetime event, so of course we both woke up late. I quickly tossed on my robe and boots and we trekked through the snow to get a clear view on that sub-zero Minnesota morning. I don’t regret sharing that moment with my son.  However, our little adventure had the adverse effect of throwing our morning routine way off track.

It was one of those burnt-toast, eggshells-in-the-eggs, spilled-milk mornings. Nothing went smoothly (I blame it on the moon). The boys were fighting for bathroom time and the dog wouldn’t stop barking. The night before, I forgot to start the dishwasher and switch the laundry, so we were missing clean dishes and clothes. Two poor souls got into a car accident just outside the school parking lot (at least my day was better than theirs), and traffic was backed up for blocks. I was irritated, edgy and stressed when I pulled up to Awaken for my first Reiki session with Deborah.

Deborah welcomed me warmly. We chatted for a bit while she showed me around the beautiful office space that she shares with Natural Elements Massage. She asked a few questions and answered a few of mine before we started the first step: Chakra Balancing.

“One of the fundamental healing modalities with my Reiki practice is to clear, activate and balance the Chakras for anyone experiencing imbalances or discontent in their life. My intention is to empower you with the awareness of this system for maintaining balance in all aspects of your life. I truly know the profound power of self-awareness and healing can be attained when a person’s Chakra system is awakened and activated.”

This process was so enlightening for me. Deborah identified areas in my life that I was struggling with. She also identified some of my strengths and offered advice on using them to overcome my struggles. She is very intuitive, and we connected immediately.

After the Chakra balancing, Deborah covered my eyes with a weighted cloth and played soft, melodic music. I took a deep breath and tried to relax. I don’t relax easily…there’s a hamster wheel in my brain that starts spinning as soon as my body slows down.

“Reiki practitioners lay their hands on or just above various places on your body, using them to “direct ‘spritually-guided Life force energy’ into one’s body.  The energy goes exactly where it is needed.”

Hmmmm…I am an open-minded person, but this seems a little…um…what’s the word? Silly? But I was promised stress-reduction and relaxation. Let’s do this!

Deborah placed her hands gently but firmly on my head, on my neck, and on my shoulders. Before long, the hamster wheel in my brain slowed down and I felt myself relax. I wasn’t asleep, but I wasn’t fully awake, either. I don’t really know how to describe it exactly. I was aware of Deborah’s presence, but I was also in a serene, meditative state. Eventually, Deborah nudged me out of my “trance” with the gentle chiming of a Tibetan singing bowl, indicating that the session had come to an end.

I left Awaken with a profound sense of relaxation: more calm, centered, and content than I had been in months. It was extraordinary. The effects of Reiki can last up to ten days. Personally, I have noticed less pain since my session (knee pain and headaches in particular), and I’m sleeping better than I have in a long time. I have also experienced a lingering sense of peace and clarity.

Reiki is not a cure for illness or disease, but many believe it can help your body heal itself. I like to think of it as a massage for your soul.
