Two years ago my supervisor sent an email to our team inviting us to attend the YWCA Mankato’s Women’s leadership conference. As I read through the email, there was a link to learn a little bit more about the conference, and I thought “what the heck; I’ll see what this is all about,” all the while feeling like, “This is not for me! I’m not an executive gal!”
I didn’t know much about the YWCA in general, but their mission of “Eliminating racism and empowering women” definitely sparked my interest, and encouraged me to read on. Their line up for presenters was less intimidating than I expected; I felt like I could “fit in,” at least for a couple days. So, I clicked that “Register” tab, and if I’m being honest, regretted it soon after.
Ugh…would I even fit in? What will I wear?
Day one of the conference started off with a social hour, which gave women the opportunity to mingle and unwind. The energy in the room was so positive, and I quickly felt like I belonged there; all women did.
The two-day lineup included speakers ranging from a Hula Hoop guru, to a Family Practice Physician, to a woman who bravely fought cancer, and reminded us just how precious life really is. It didn’t matter how much money you made, what you did for a living or how you dressed, every woman was as important as the next.
I laughed, I cried, and left that conference believing there is a leader is every one of us, and that is something that deserves to be celebrated!
I have attended YWCA Mankato’s Women’s Leadership Conference every year since its inception. The speakers are fantastic, very engaging and full of knowledge. I’ve always left with a new perspective on things I didn’t know, I didn’t know. As women we often forget to take time for ourselves to focus on our personal growth even though we know it is important. If you do one thing for your self this fall, it should be this conference… You won’t regret it! -Mandy Hunecke, Mankato Moms Blog Contributor
